Where I serve

After serving two years on campus at the University of Northern Colorado (Sko Bears!) and one year on FOCUS’s Philanthropy Engagement Team, I (Alex) now serve as the Operations Manager for the Philanthropy Engagement Team.

My Story

I got involved with FOCUS after my business got shut down by the fire department.

Don’t worry – I didn’t start any fires.

In my college years, I just wanted to find a way to get rich. In my senior year of college, I started a business taking out trash for apartment residents. I had a great business model, and my first year’s projected revenue was very high. But shortly before things took off, the fire department told me that I was violating the fire code. I couldn’t find any part of the fire code that I was violating, but when I asked what I was doing wrong they replied, “the fire marshal has unlimited discretion in interpreting the fire code.” So my business was shut down at the end of June 2022.

I lost my business, my girlfriend at the time, many of my friends left town, and I didn’t know what to do. I was mad at God. I thought He had a plan.

He did. In August, I went back home to Kansas (thanks mom and dad). I wanted to get away from everything for a while, and found myself on a Catholic retreat in Nebraska. This is where I encountered God and He turned my life around.
