James: God has called me to serve our missionaries and college students across the country, particularly our men on staff. While I work in Denver, I’ll frequently travel to help run retreats, make campus visits, and lead both our SEEK programming and annual missionary training sites. I’m helping men grow in their character and virtue so they can become the most effective missionaries they can be, eventually find their vocation, and ultimately become saints in heaven. I serve God in this way primarily through the Freedom Project, an initiative focused on removing obstacles to holiness and cultivating the virtues of chastity, sobriety, and excellence, and through the Bosco Project, an extension of the Freedom Project that provides even more intensive formation in a household environment.
Sarah: During my three years at Ole Miss, I was blessed to experience taking students on mission trips. In doing so my eyes were opened to the deep impact that FOCUS Missions can have on a student – allowing them to experience Christ in the poor. These trips quickly became some of my favorite experiences that I invited students into. Seeing some of them come back to campus after a spring break trip with a changed life, after they had met Christ in another, and beginning to pray more regularly or come to daily Mass made everything worth it.
In Fall 2022 I joined the FOCUS Missions team. God has asked me to continue to say yes to the adventure of mission and live it out through guiding and helping facilitate deep encounters with the poor around the world. It is with great joy that I get to be part of a team of Christ-centered individuals working from the Denver Support Center.
As missionaries, our greatest desire is to lead all people to Christ.
James grew up in a strong Catholic home but practiced the bare minimum when he first went to college. “It wasn’t until a missionary named Josh reached out to me that I discovered the real depth of what the Catholic Church offers to every soul on earth. It wasn’t until I led my own Bible study that I learned I could share my faith with others, and it wasn’t until FOCUS offered me a job that I learned how I was called to give my whole life to Christ, with the special opportunity to give some of it to serve on the college campus.”
Sarah’s life has been transformed by Jesus and she wants nothing more than to bring this joy to others and introduce them to the life-changing message of the Gospel. “In His ministry on earth, Jesus humbled Himself to meet us on our level, taking on our humanity, and spent most of His time investing deeply in a few. I look to Jesus own example to find the best method of reaching the world. I’ve been constantly amazed by the different souls I’ve encountered on campus. These encounters have led me to a deeper relationship with Jesus and have taught me to fully surrender my worries and anxieties and allow Him to help me carry my cross. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has led me to where I am today.”
Now, as of Fall 2022, we are married! It is a joy to be a witness of the Catholic faith through our marriage and new family life in our community here in Denver. We have been ecstatic to welcome a baby girl into the world as of August 2023!
When we answered the call to join FOCUS, we made the decision to rely completely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help us through this mission. We’ve been blessed with the most amazing people who have journeyed with us as we served at Seton Hall, Ole Miss, and now in Denver. If you are interested in standing behind us in the battle for souls on the college campus, please let us know the best way to reach you and we will schedule an appointment. We’d be honored to share this mission with you.
