My name is Jarett Pemberton and I’m a FOCUS missionary. I’m honored that Jesus has called me to serve at the University of Nevada Reno.

Within every human heart is an ache for something greater than ourselves, and most of my life was spent in ignorance of this ache. When I arrived at the University of Wichita State, my only ambitions were to graduate, find a job along the way, and get married. As I began to spend more time in an unfamiliar environment, I began to realize that something was not right and that there was something missing from my life. I assessed that I just needed to make friends and that these aches would go away, so I joined the fraternity Phi Delta Theta and assumed that would solve my problems. The problem with my train of thought is that you can’t fill a God-sized hole in your heart with things besides God.

I’ve heard it said that the trailhead to Christianity often begins at rock bottom, and I found that to be the truth in my journey toward a relationship with Christ. In my junior year, the life that I had built for myself came crashing down and I was left with nothing. The only thing I could think to do was turn to my friend Nathan who knew Jesus and see if he would tell me where I went wrong. After many months of friendship and conversation with Nathan, I became convicted that Jesus had to be the thing I’d been searching for my whole life. Once I realized my desire to give my life completely to God, my whole life was radically changed. God began to lay the foundation that has been and will continue to support me for the rest of my life. The past 2 years have been unlike anything I could’ve imagined, but I know that I’m right where the Lord needs me to be. Now I have an opportunity to go on an adventure with God as I walk with college students in their journey toward a personal relationship with Jesus.

When I answered the call to join FOCUS, I made the decision to rely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help me through this mission.
