Matthew Prendergast

My name is Matt and I’m a FOCUS missionary!

Where I serve

God has called me on mission to serve college students at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where I am in my third year and now serving as the Team Director. In addition to leading bible studies and mentoring young men at Drake, I manage and coach my teammates to reach souls for Jesus Christ and His Church.

My Story

For most of my life I viewed my faith and relationship with God as simply something that I did as if it was nothing more than a sport, club, or hobby. As I entered my freshman year of college at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, I found myself distant from Him and searching for happiness and meaning in the “college experience” like many students today. This pursuit was constantly met with an emptiness inside me and an intense desire for something more. In the countless times I turned my back on Christ, he never stopped knocking at the door of my heart. It was through my time in college with FOCUS that I radically encountered the Lord and discovered my identity, that who I am is His beloved son. In my conversion I realized that my Catholic faith was not just part of my life, but contained the source of life and true path to eternal joy. As He has become the center of my life, I have never experienced greater longing to grow deeper in relationship with Him and to share His love and mercy with others.

As a FOCUS missionary, my greatest desire is to lead college students to Christ (in a world where the need is more urgent than ever). My life has been transformed by Jesus and I want nothing more than to bring this joy to others and introduce them to the life-changing message of the Gospel. In His ministry on earth, Jesus humbled Himself to meet us on our level, taking on our humanity, and spent most of His time investing deeply in a few. I look to His own example to find the best method of reaching the world to know goodness, truth, and beauty through the love of Christ.
