1. Freedom
Bakhita’s life challenges the notion that we are merely products of our circumstances. Kidnapped, sold into slavery, and subjected to brutal treatment, she could have easily succumbed to despair. Yet, Bakhita chose to trust in God and found freedom in Christ in the midst of her circumstances. 2. Identity
When St. Josephine Bakhita was kidnapped, she was stripped of her birth name and given the name “Bakhita,” which means “lucky” in Arabic—an ironic label considering her circumstances. She lost her family, her homeland, and her sense of self. However, she discovered her true identity in Christ through her baptism, which she regarded as more significant than her unknown birthdate. Bakhita’s story reminds us that our deepest identity is not determined by our past or what others impose on us, but by our relationship with God.

3. Gratitude
One of the most extraordinary aspects of Bakhita’s life is her capacity for gratitude. St. Josephine Bakhita’s introduction to Christianity came through a man named Illuminato Checchini. Illuminato gave her a crucifix and explained the sacrifice of Jesus. His simple yet profound act of sharing the Gospel with Bakhita highlights the importance of discipleship. Checchini didn’t just tell her about Christ; he shared his life with her, guiding her spiritual journey. This reminds us that evangelization is not only about words but also about walking alongside others in their faith journey.

5. Simplicity

Her story is a reminder that no matter our circumstances, we can all aspire to sainthood through God’s grace.
