My Story

As a college athlete, I have experienced first-hand the brokenness that stems from placing your identity in your sport. I believed that my worth was rooted in my performance and my identity was founded on my skill and ability to play softball. I found myself continuously searching for satisfaction, for acceptance, and for joy. After searching for all of freshman year, my teammate invited me to the team bible study she led with a FOCUS missionary. It was at this bible study where I first encountered the Lord as we read about The Woman At The Well (John 4:7-31). In this passage, I found a God who loves me regardless of my actions, my past, my failures, or my successes; and not only that, but He sought me out, unlike anyone ever has. I learned to see how God saw me and that it is His love and His mercy that my identity is founded on.

If it were not for the FOCUS missionary who encountered me, I would not have come to know my true identity and my worth. Every person deserves to know that their identity and worth has nothing to do with their performance or playing ability and everything to do with being a child of God who loved them into existence. There is no greater joy than this, to know that you are loved by Jesus Christ, who has sought you out through all of time and chose to die for you because of how much you matter to Him.

There are so many college athletes suffering and searching for fulfillment that can only be found in God. For that reason, I gave God my “yes” to serve with FOCUS, in order to facilitate encounters with Christ like FOCUS missionaries did for me, so others can come to know their true identity and authentic love.
