After serving six years on campus in Chicago and at Indiana University, I am very excited to be serving as a regional director for FOCUS. I lead teams at six schools across Ohio, Wisconsin, and Iowa (University of Cincinnati, Miami University, Wright State, Ohio Northern University, Loras College, and University of Wisconsin – Platteville). Coaching the team directors on those campuses to be great leaders is a joy for me every week!

Coming into my junior year at Indiana University, I was wrestling with how I wanted faith to look in my life. Thanks to a high school friend who was deeply involved in FOCUS, I was growing more convicted I needed to try out the Catholic community. I wasn’t going to mass, but I made the decision that starting that year I was going to give the Catholic center a try – I started going to mass, and through my high school friend, got connected to a chaplain and a missionary.

That missionary invited me to his Bible study, and although I was often one foot in, one foot out, the friendship of that missionary kept me coming back to Bible study and other events at the Catholic center. That Winter, I attended my first FOCUS conference in Chicago, and was blown away. All of my hesitancies about Catholicism melted away, and for the first time I was excited to be Catholic. No longer one foot out. The next semester I found myself growing deeply in prayer and frequenting the sacraments more regularly. In the Spring, I was invited to lead a Bible study of my own.

Leading that Bible study transformed my life. Living a life poured out for others was so much better than living a life centered around my own success. I was happier than I’d ever been. The experience opened me up to the idea of working for FOCUS full time. It is a great joy to serve the organization that God used to impact my own life so profoundly.

It is not practical for everyone to go into full time ministry, but we are called to be a part of Jesus’ command to go make disciples of all nations.
