Where I serve

My Story

Hey! My name is Daniela Hernandez, and I am a first year FOCUS Missionary !!! 🙂 I was born and raised Cradle Catholic. My immigrant parents (from Mexico and El Salvador) worked hard to put my three siblings and I in Catholic private schools from elementary to junior high. Being culturally Catholic, I knew about Jesus growing up but never really had a relationship with Him.

In high school, I remember feeling alone in my faith, like I was the only young person wanting to know more. After going to a Steubenville Conference in Missouri, I quickly realized I was not alone and there were SO many young people who also had similar questions and wanted to grow in their faith. It was also the first time I said YES to following Jesus Christ.

While studying at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, I felt a strong desire to learn how to read my bible. As I was tapping on Instagram stories, I stumbled upon FOCUS. They’d posted a story inviting college students to join a bible study. God was hearing my prayers. And I immediately signed up. After graduating from the UAFS with a Biology degree, the doors for medical school kept closing. I took a leap of faith and went into teaching preschool at a Catholic Elementary school for the next few years.

The summer after my first year teaching, I had the incredible opportunity to go on a FOCUS Mission Trip to Argentina! It was the first time I met missionaries in person AND religious sisters, Servidoras. This trip was life changing and marked my life forever – I was all in for Jesus.

God also gave me the courage to begin leading my own women’s bible study at my home parish in Arkansas (using FOCUS Equip Bible Study Plans)! This was a huge gift. And God provided abundantly. It is SO important that no one walks the faith journey alone and that you are surrounded by people who love Jesus and point you back to Him. I am deeply convicted and passionate about this and why I love FOCUS!

When I accepted the Lord’s call to serve as a FOCUS missionary, I was also invited to fully rely on God to provide for me financially and spiritually through the generosity and sacrifice of my mission partners. St. Therese once said: “Some give by going to the missions. Some go by giving to the missions. Without both, there is no mission.”
