During my first year of mission, I am working with college students at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Our vibrant Catholic community at St. John XXIII Catholic Church continually keeps open arms for students who are searching for truth, purpose, and authentic friendship. It has been a tremendous blessing to lead Bible studies, walk with students in discipleship, and see how Christ is transforming the lives of students!

Being on campus as a student has allowed me to see firsthand the pitfalls that are presented to many during our college years. In a generation that is the most “connected” in all of history, studies show that we’ve never felt more alone. Walking to class, I’ve seen the blank stares of young people, carrying invisible burdens, with a God-sized hole in their hearts that often gets filled with counterfeit peace. It’s time that we connect and relearn the art of true empathy; this is the urgency that lit a fire in my heart for Mission.

Behind my mission is a simple story. I grew up in a Catholic family and attended Catholic school from grade school through high school. While I received a strong foundation in the faith, by early high school, I began to grow complacent. I saw my faith more as a restriction than a pathway to true freedom.

Eventually, I reached a point of desolation, reaching out to God, I told him, “If you have a plan for me, I need to see where you are.” Not long after, Cruz — now my fiancé — came into my life. Through journeying in faith together, his turn to faith helped me rediscover God’s love and was instrumental in leading me back to Christ.

When I arrived at CSU, I discovered my true “home away from home” at St. John XXIII Catholic Church at Colorado State, right across from campus. There, I encountered a thriving community of students who are striving together in our faith, daily habits, relationships, and careers. These are the kinds of friendships that I would love to share with other students through my time on mission.

Through my journey, I have come to find out time and time again that God knows every desire of your heart and provides abundantly more than we could ever ask or imagine.

The joy, freedom, and friendship that Christ and His community have gifted me have changed my life. That’s why I’ve decided to reach out to others in my generation who are isolated and struggling with the empty gratification that is easily found in college.

When I said “yes” to serving with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), I also said “yes” to living fully on mission — spiritually and financially supported by others who believe in this work.
