My name is Rafael Hernandez, and I’m excited to begin my first year on mission as a FOCUS missionary. This year, I have the privilege of serving the students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. As an engineering graduate myself, I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to walk with students who share a similar background and to share with them the joy of knowing Christ, loving Him, and the truth of the Gospel.

Mi nombre es Rafael Hernandez y estoy muy emocionado de comenzar mi primer año de misión como misionero con FOCUS. Este año tengo el privilegio de servir a los estudiantes de Worcester Polytechnic Institute, en Worcester, Massachusetts. Como graduado universitario, me siento especialmente agradecido por la oportunidad de acompañar a jóvenes que comparten un camino parecido al mío y compartir con ellos la alegría de conocer a Cristo, amarlo y vivir la verdad del Evangelio.

I grew up in a Catholic family where faith was always present, but for a long time, it felt more like something I inherited than something I truly lived or believed in. I was culturally Catholic—I knew the traditions, but my heart was distant. It wasn’t until my fourth year of college that everything changed. During a difficult season—filled with questions about identity, purpose, and where I belonged—I encountered the love of Jesus in a real and personal way. He met me through a faithful Catholic community, through deep prayer, and through people who saw me and walked with me. I realized that Christ wasn’t just inviting me to believe in Him, but to follow Him closely and share Him with others. As a mechanical engineering student, I saw how easy it was to chase achievement while ignoring the deeper hunger in my heart. Now, as a FOCUS missionary, I have the privilege of walking with students who might be where I once was—searching—and helping them encounter the joy, freedom, and purpose that only Christ can give.

Crecí en una familia católica donde la fe siempre estuvo presente, pero por mucho tiempo fue algo que simplemente formaba parte de mi entorno, no algo que yo realmente viviera o creyera con el corazón. Me consideraba católico porque así había sido criado, conocía las tradiciones, pero no tenía una relación personal con Dios. Todo cambió en mi cuarto año de universidad. Estaba pasando por una etapa difícil, con muchas preguntas sobre quién era, cuál era mi propósito y a dónde pertenecía. Fue entonces cuando me encontré con el amor de Jesús de una forma profunda y real. Él salió a mi encuentro a través de una comunidad católica viva, la oración y personas que me acompañaron con amor y paciencia. Ahí entendí que Jesús no solo me llamaba a creer en Él, sino a seguirlo de cerca y compartirlo con los demás. Como estudiante universitario, me di cuenta de lo fácil que es enfocarse solo en los logros y dejar de lado lo que realmente llena el corazón. Hoy, como misionero de FOCUS, tengo la dicha de acompañar a otros jóvenes que quizás estén en ese mismo lugar de búsqueda, y de ayudarlos a descubrir la alegría, la libertad y el sentido profundo que solo Cristo puede dar.
