We encounter God in an intimate relationship through daily prayer, the sacraments and the Scriptures.
“Our business is to attain heaven; everything else is a sheer waste of time.” -Saint Vincent de Paul
God has called me to serve the students at the University of Maine, located in Orono, Maine. I am a “VC” (Varsity Catholic) missionary, so I will primarily serve student athletes and walk with them in their faith.
I was baptized and raised Catholic, receiving my First Confession and First Communion, and was taught the basics of the faith from a young age by my family. However, as sports became a priority for my siblings and me, we slowly began to drift away from the faith. This continued into high school, especially as my wrestling career began to take off. I decided to attend Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina to continue wrestling. Throughout college, I received many accolades and continued to succeed at a high level. From the world’s perspective, I had it all. I was immersed in the college party scene, had fun friends, good grades, and an active social life. As a redshirt freshman, I earned the starting spot and ended the season as an NCAA All-American. I had more than I had ever wanted. But something was missing. I had filled my life with things of the world, but I was desiring something more. I realized I was missing true fulfillment that could only be found in the faith I had been raised in. By God’s grace, that desire led me to seek guidance from a priest that I knew at the monastery on Belmont Abbey’s campus. He connected me with campus ministry, and during my junior year (2023), I went through RCIA. That spring, I was finally confirmed and fully received into the Church. Around the same time, I was connected with a FOCUS missionary on campus who became a close friend and mentor. To put it simply, he changed my life. He built me up in the faith, filled in so many gaps in my formation and knowledge, taught me how to build up others, and became a best friend as he showed me true friendship and community.
Over my senior year and fifth year, I prioritized my faith, and it transformed every area of my life, including my relationships, academics, athletics, and leadership. I began to see how the growth God had blessed me with was impacting others, and it was deeply fulfilling. During this time, I was introduced to the idea of serving as a FOCUS missionary. Over the course of a year and a half, the idea came up about five times, but I kept talking myself out of it, planning instead to pursue a future in the military right after college. However, the next time the idea surfaced, it felt different. Through prayer and discernment, God’s call for me to serve as a FOCUS missionary became clear. I now hope to have the same impact on others that my missionaries had on me.
When I said yes to God’s call and FOCUS, I also said yes to relying on my mission partners for their spiritual and financial support through prayers and monthly giving. This directly supports my mission to bring others to faith and walk with them in their journey as the Lord changes their lives. If you are interested in supporting me on this mission please reach out. I would love to discuss sharing my mission with you and I appreciate your prayers and generosity.
