You feel the nudge in your heart. Maybe it came during prayer, after a mission trip, or while reading about the lives of the saints. You want to serve. You want your faith to do something. But where do you even begin?
Good news: you’re not alone—and the Catholic Church has always been a place where faith and mission go hand-in-hand. Whether you’re a student, young adult, parent, or retiree, there are countless ways to get involved and make an eternal impact through volunteering.
Here’s your guide to getting started.
1. Ask God First
It may sound obvious, but the first step in any mission is prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to stir your heart toward where you’re most needed—and where your gifts will bear fruit. Whether your mission field is across the ocean or across your campus, God has already gone ahead of you.
Tip: Try praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Not sure how? Our guide to Eucharistic Adoration can help.
2. Think Local and Global
You don’t have to book a flight to start serving. Some of the most powerful needs are right where you are.
Local Volunteer Opportunities
- Your Parish – Ask your priest or ministry coordinator what support they need. Many parishes are looking for help with youth groups, RCIA, hospitality, or outreach to the sick and elderly.
- Catholic Charities USA – Serve immigrants, families in crisis, or those experiencing homelessness in your community.
- Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Help those in poverty through hands-on service and relational ministry.
- Pregnancy Centers – Volunteer at a Walking with Moms in Need parish initiative or a local pro-life pregnancy resource center.
- FOCUS – Find out if FOCUS operates on a campus or parish near you, and reach out to see if they are organizing any volunteer opportunities! You can get involved regardless if you are a student or parishioner.
Global Volunteer Opportunities
- Catholic Relief Services – Advocate, fundraise, or serve with their global mission to end poverty.
- Salesian Lay Missionaries – With a wide array of countries to serve in, the Salesians echo their founder, St. John Bosco, and his passion for serving young and vulnerable people.
- FOCUS Missions – Join one of our mission trips across the globe and serve those in need while deepening your encounter with Christ.
3. Use Your Season and Skills
Are you a college student? A recent grad? A parent with young kids? Retired?
God isn’t asking you to do it all—just to say yes to what you can do now.

5. Remember: It’s Not Just What You Do—It’s Who You Become
Volunteering isn’t about checking a box. It’s about becoming a person of mission. As Pope Benedict XVI said:
“Christ did not promise an easy life. Those who desire comforts have dialed the wrong number. Rather, he shows us the way to great things, the good, towards an authentic human life.”
Let that greatness begin with love—lived out in small, generous ways.
