Session 4 Overview: Exodus and the Story of Moses
This session begins our deep dive into Exodus and continues to follow the covenantal journey of the Israelite people and their transformation under the guidance of Moses.
Remember that the story of Moses and the Exodus isn’t just an isolated event but a piece of a much larger puzzle in the big picture of salvation history. Think about how God’s covenant family grew from Noah’s simple family to an entire nation under Moses. This journey through the wilderness to the Promised Land is about the Israelites establishing themselves as a nation, which mirrors our spiritual journey as Christians from this life to heaven.
Beginning in Exodus, this book will set us up for what’s next: King David’s era and, eventually, Jesus’s coming, which expands this covenant to the entire world.

Discussion Questions
Session Four: Moses
Small Group Discussion Guide
Exodus 1-12, 24, 32; Numbers 13-14; Deuteronomy 28, 30
Discussion Questions
- The Hebrew word for “serve” is “Avad.” It is used to describe the physical toil and labor of the Israelites but also connotes both work and worship. Therefore, the Israelites were not only held captive physically but spiritually as well. This theme of freedom to worship is critical for understanding the Exodus narrative. What did you learn about “serving” God in the chapter?
- God inflicted the plagues on Egypt and demonstrated His power over the pagan gods. What are some of the “pagan gods” of the culture we live in (i.e. success, popularity, fitness, education, or technology)? How can these things become idols in our lives? In what ways could we “sacrifice” these idols?
- The Passover was a bold challenge to the Israelites to make their faith public in a hostile environment. How does this challenge relate to us as Christians today? Have you ever felt like God was calling you to display your faith publicly, though you knew it might not be well-received? How did it turn out?
- Why was the sin of the golden calf so serious?
- Like the Israelites, sometimes we might have moments of deep closeness to God. At other times, we might turn away from him. How is God calling us to respond in each of these situations?
