Christian life is not meant to be lived in silence.
When we encounter Christ — in prayer, in the sacraments, in friendship — we receive a gift that shapes our own lives deeply. But this gift is not meant to remain only with us. It is meant to be shared.
Jesus does not simply call us to follow Him quietly. He invites us to participate in His mission — to help others encounter His love and mercy. This invitation is what FOCUS calls the High Call to Mission: a call to live out authentic discipleship by sharing the Gospel with others as missionary disciples.
A Call That Changes Everything
When we read the Gospels, we see that Jesus’ mission was not merely about gathering followers. He invested deeply in relationships — inviting ordinary people into a life-changing encounter with Him, forming them in faith, and sending them out to share that same life with others.
The call to mission begins the moment we choose to follow Christ. We stand under His standard, recognizing that a spiritual battle is taking place around us and in every human heart. The question before every Christian is the same one St. Ignatius of Loyola posed centuries ago: Which side will you serve?
This mission — the mission of evangelization — is rooted not in fear or obligation, but in love. We share Christ because His love transformed us. We invite others into His life because we know that true life, peace and joy are found in Him.
What It Means to Answer the Call
Answering the High Call to Mission does not require extraordinary talent or a special title. It begins with a simple “yes” — a humble willingness to let Christ’s love shape your life and to share that love with the people around you.
Mission involves three key movements:
- Win — Encounter Christ
First, we help others encounter Jesus personally. Evangelization begins with friendship and witness — showing others who Christ is by the way we live and love. - Build — Deepen Faith
Once someone accepts Christ, we walk with them in growth. This includes prayer, fellowship, sacramental life and ongoing formation, helping them become rooted in Christ and equipped for mission. - Send — Go Forth in Mission
True discipleship does not end with personal growth. It leads to sending others out to make disciples themselves — forming a cycle of missionary disciples who evangelize and form others in turn.
This pattern — often described as win, build and send — reflects the way Jesus formed His first disciples and entrusted them with His mission.
Why This Matters
The urgency of this call is real. Souls around us long for truth, freedom, love and purpose — and only Christ can satisfy those deepest longings. When Christians choose to say “yes” to mission, they become instruments of God’s grace and mercy in the world.
Saying “yes” to mission does not mean being perfect before you begin. It means opening your heart to Christ and allowing Him to work through your life — in friendship, in simple conversations, and in the ordinary ways you love others.
Every act of kindness, every invitation to prayer or Scripture, every witness of mercy and joy — these are ways we live out our call to mission.
An Invitation To You
The High Call to Mission is not an elite task reserved for a few. It is the invitation of the Gospel extended to every baptized Christian. Jesus entrusted His mission to all who follow Him, inviting us to participate in His work of salvation.
Today, ask yourself:
- Where is Christ inviting me to share His love?
- Who has God placed in my life that needs to hear the Good News?
- How can I allow Christ to work through me, in friendship and in witness?
When we respond with a humble “yes,” even in small ways, we begin to participate in something much greater than ourselves — the transformation of hearts and the spread of Christ’s kingdom on earth.
