Where I Serve – Being Light Where It’s Dark

I serve as a missionary with Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) at the University of Passau in Germany, a place where many young adults take their first steps into independent life.

In the middle of exams, identity questions, and pressure to succeed, students often carry deep questions alone:

What am I living for?
Is there truth?
Is there more to life than achievement and career?

That is exactly where we step in  not with answers from above, but with open hearts, authentic friendship, and a lived faith that truly sustains.

We walk with students in their daily lives  in prayer, in doubts, in struggles, and in new beginnings. We build spiritual community on campus: a family of faith that invites, challenges, and supports.

Because when a young person encounters Jesus, everything changes. And that transformation doesn’t stop with them, it spreads.

My Story – From Doubt to Calling

I grew up in Germany’s Ruhr region as what we jokingly call a “submarine Catholic” surfacing at Christmas and Easter, then disappearing again. And yet, faith always fascinated me. Deep down, I knew that there had to be more.

The journey was not easy. I wrestled with doubt about God, about the Church, and about myself.

Then, on the very first day of my university studies in 2017, my mother passed away unexpectedly.
In one moment, everything changed. I lost part of my family and found myself standing in the middle of grief and brokenness.

And yet, it was precisely there that Jesus met me.

In the midst of sorrow and confusion, He gently and faithfully began to heal my heart. I experienced that He is real. That He is present. That He calls personally.

Through different seasons in Passau, Düsseldorf, and Bremen, the Lord made something clear to me:
I do not want to live my life for myself but for Him.

Today, I serve as a missionary at the university where my own faith was reborn.

Our Family and a New Calling

The Lord has abundantly blessed our family.

My wife is American, originally from Michigan, and we have been married for four years. Together with our sons Edward and Corbinian, we are grateful to serve the Church as a family. She is also a FOCUS missionary, working with students around the world on the digital outreach team.

Over time, we have sensed that God is opening a new chapter for us.

We believe the Lord is blessing and calling us to the United State to serve from there with an international missionary vision. From America, we desire to continue investing in young people, strengthening the Church, and helping raise up missionary disciples who will go out into the world.

We trust that the same God who called us in Germany is now preparing the next step.

Campus ministry is not theory. It is lived Gospel.

It looks like coffee after lectures.
Bible studies in small apartments.
Prayer before life-changing decisions.
Walking with students through heartbreak, vocation discernment, and conversion.

And we see the fruit:

• Students begin to pray.
• Relationships are healed.
• Vocations emerge.
• New missionaries are sent.

But we cannot do this alone.
