We encounter God in an intimate relationship through daily prayer, the sacraments and the Scriptures.
Hello! My name is Johann Mohnen, and I am a first-year FOCUS missionary at UNL. GBR!
“The world offers you comfort. But you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness.”
– Pope Benedict XVI
The Lord has asked me to serve college students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), where I will serve with nine other missionaries to walk with students in the light of the Faith!
After leaving home in Beaverton, OR, and entering the University of Oregon for my Bachelor’s of Music in Composition, I continued to go to Sunday Mass at the Catholic Newman Center right next to campus. This is where I first encountered FOCUS missionaries, who began to invite me to bible studies, events at the Newman Center, and, above all, introduced me to authentic friendship. This is also where I began to realize that the Catholic Faith is much deeper than I could ever imagine, and that I had no idea of who Jesus Christ is, or that I could have a deep, personal, and fulfilling relationship with him, and, incredibly, that Jesus wanted that relationship with me. Being able to encounter FOCUS missionaries’ witness to Christ encouraged me to dive into the divine intimacy that we were made for and crave. They taught me how to pray and I began attending daily Mass and consistent confession. Those simple invitations by the FOCUS missionaries helped me ultimately recognize that every soul, including mine, desires to be known and loved intimately. As I, and so many others, tried to find fulfillment of that subconscious desire in so many things and people, I grew to recognize and be completely convicted that the only way to fulfill that desire completely is Jesus Christ. He found me through the missionaries at Oregon, and I have been called to do the same for other students. The college experience is no short of offering “solutions” to the desire to be known and loved, but through me, Christ can introduce countless students to a life full of meaning and worth living. A life for him.
When I accepted my position at FOCUS as a missionary, I surrendered myself to the providence of God and the spiritual and financial support of mission partners who directly mobilize the Great Commission (Mt 28:19). As a mission team, my partners and I will reach countless students who are searching, and introduce them to true abundant life with Jesus. If you are interested in partnering with me, please reach out so we can schedule an appointment!

By building genuine friendships, we meet students on a deeper level.
We teach students how to share the gospel, who in turn teach other students how to pass it on.
