Confirmation is a big moment in your faith journey—it’s when you receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit and take a huge step in owning your Catholic faith. And one of the most exciting (and sometimes challenging) parts? Getting to choose a Confirmation saint!
Your Confirmation saint isn’t just a name you pick at random—it’s the name of a heavenly friend, intercessor, and role model who will walk with you on your journey to holiness. So, how do you choose the right one?
Let’s dive in!
Step 1: Pray About It
Before anything else, ask God to guide you. He knows your heart better than anyone, and He already has the perfect saint in mind for you. Pray something simple like:
“Lord, help me find a saint who will inspire me and lead me closer to You.”
Sometimes, God places a particular saint on your heart in unexpected ways—through a conversation, a book, or even a random moment. Pay attention!
Step 2: Consider Your Interests & Struggles
Saints come from every walk of life—scholars, warriors, artists, mothers, mystics, missionaries, and more. Think about:
- What are you passionate about? Do you love music, science, adventure, serving others? There’s probably a saint who shared your interests!
- What are your struggles? If you wrestle with fear, patience, trust, or anything else, there’s a saint who overcame something similar and can inspire you.
- What virtues do you want to grow in? Maybe you want to be more courageous, joyful, or prayerful—look for a saint who lived those qualities.
Step 3: Read Their Stories
Once you have a few names in mind, dive into their stories! Read about their lives, how they encountered Jesus, and what made them saints. Some saints lived radical, dramatic lives, while others became holy through quiet, everyday faithfulness.
If their story makes you think, “Wow, I want to be like that!”—you might have found your Confirmation saint!
Step 4: Ask for Their Intercession
Before making your final decision to choose a confirmation saint, start praying to the saints you’re considering. Ask them to pray for you and help you discern. Maybe even ask them to send you a sign!
You can pray something simple like:
“St. [Name], I’m thinking about choosing you as my Confirmation saint. Please pray for me and help me follow God’s will in my life!”
