The Church around the world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, a humble and courageous shepherd who led us closer to Christ. His funeral will be held on April 26 at St. Peter’s Basilica — a sacred moment for Catholics to honor his life and pray for the soul of the 266th successor of St. Peter.
The world is asking now, after the death of Pope Francis: What happens now?
Let’s explore what comes next.
A Funeral Rooted in Simplicity and Tradition
Normally, papal funerals are surrounded by centuries-old traditions: several days of mourning, special rites, and burial in a triple coffin (cypress wood, lead, and oak). Yet, in keeping with his deep commitment to humility, Pope Francis requested a simple wooden coffin lined with fabric — reflecting the simplicity that marked his papacy from beginning to end.
Before his funeral, the Holy Father’s body will lie in state at the Vatican for public visitation, giving the faithful a chance to pray, grieve, and thank God for his life. The Church, united across the world, pauses to say farewell to the man chosen to carry Peter’s mantle in our time.
The Time Between Popes: Prayer and Waiting
After a pope’s death, the Church enters a period known as “sede vacante,” meaning “the seat [of Peter] is vacant.”
During this time, we are called into prayer and patience, trusting that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide the Church just as He always has.
Approximately 15 to 20 days after the funeral, the cardinals will gather in conclave to elect the next pope.

What Is the Conclave?
The conclave is a sacred, centuries-old process:
-
Cardinals under the age of 80 travel to Rome.
-
They gather in the Sistine Chapel, under Michelangelo’s Last Judgment.
-
They pray together, asking for the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
-
They take an oath of secrecy and begin voting — up to four times a day.
A new pope must receive a two-thirds majority to be elected.
The world will look to the chimney of the Sistine Chapel for a simple but powerful sign:
-
Black smoke means no decision yet.
-
White smoke means: Habemus Papam! — “We have a pope!”
When white smoke rises, bells ring out, and a new era for the Church begins.
Hope in the Midst of Grief
Pope Francis’ death reminds us that every earthly ministry, no matter how great, eventually passes — but the Church, founded by Christ Himself, endures forever.
We honor Pope Francis for his witness of mercy, simplicity, and joyful discipleship. We also await with hope the man who will be chosen next — the next successor to Peter, the next voice to proclaim the Gospel to a world hungry for truth.
In these days, let us pray:
-
For the repose of Pope Francis’ soul
-
For the unity and renewal of the Church
-
For the cardinals who will soon gather in conclave
-
That we may respond to Christ’s call with the same courage and trust Pope Francis so often encouraged in us.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
