Birthdays are a natural moment to do what Catholics do best: thank God for the gift of life, ask for grace for the year ahead, and entrust a person more deeply to the Lord.
Below are Catholic birthday prayers you can use for yourself, a friend, a spouse, a child, or anyone you’re celebrating — plus official-style birthday blessings from the Church’s tradition.
1) A short Catholic birthday prayer (for anyone)
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the gift of (Name)’s life. Fill this new year with Your peace and grace. Draw them closer to You, protect them from harm, and help them grow in holiness, joy, and love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
2) A birthday blessing for a child (USCCB)
This is a beautiful, Scripture-based blessing from the U.S. bishops:
Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you.”
Blessing:
May God, in whose presence our ancestors walked, bless you. R/. Amen.
May God, who has been your shepherd from birth until now, keep you. R/. Amen.
May God, who saves you from all harm, give you peace. R/. Amen.
Perfect for a card, bedtime prayer, or family dinner.
3) A formal “Birthday Blessing” from the Book of Blessings
If you want something that feels liturgical/Churchy (and it’s genuinely from the Book of Blessings tradition), here are two excellent options:
A) For adults (Book of Blessings text)
Prayer of Blessing (adult):
“God of all creation, we offer you grateful praise for the gift of life. Hear the prayers of N., your servant, who recalls today the day of his/her birth and rejoices in your gifts of life and love, family and friends. Bless him/her with your presence and surround him/her with your love that he/she may enjoy many happy years, all of them pleasing to you. We ask this through Christ our Lord.” Amen.
B) A shorter version (still Book of Blessings style)
“Loving God, you created all the people of the world and you know each of us by name. We thank you for N., who today celebrates his/her birthday. Bless him/her with your love and friendship that he/she may grow in wisdom, knowledge, and grace…” Amen.
4) Catholic birthday prayers for specific people
For a friend
Lord Jesus, thank You for my friend (Name). Bless them with deep joy, wise choices, and steady faith. Help them know they are loved by You, and make them a blessing to everyone around them. Amen.
For a spouse
Father, thank You for (Name) and for our marriage. Bless them with strength, peace, and hope this year. Make our love more like Yours — patient, faithful, and generous. Amen.
For a parent
God, thank You for the life and love of (Mom/Dad/Name). Reward their sacrifices, renew their strength, and bless them with a year full of grace. Amen.
For someone who’s struggling
Jesus, be close to (Name) today. On their birthday, give them comfort, courage, and peace. Remind them they are held by You, even when life feels heavy. Amen.
5) A birthday prayer “meal blessing” for a family celebration
Heavenly Father, we praise You for all Your gifts. In a special way, we thank You for (Name). Bless them always in Your love, and bless us as we celebrate together. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
6) Scripture “birthday blessings” you can add to a card
These are classic Catholic-friendly picks (great for captions too):
- Numbers 6:24–26 (the priestly blessing)
- Psalm 139 (God knows you intimately)
- Psalm 90:12 (“Teach us to number our days…”)
- Philippians 1:3–6 (gratitude + confidence in God’s work)
Tip: write one verse at the top of the card, then add one of the prayers above.
7) Catholic ways to celebrate a birthday spiritually
- Offer a Mass intention for the person (or go to Mass with them).
- Ask for a blessing from a priest or deacon (especially meaningful for kids/teens).
- Pray one decade of the Rosary for them.
Do a quick gratitude examen: “God, where did I see You this year?”
