God has called me to serve at the University of Illinois-Chicago! Go Flames!

I grew up cradle Catholic and knew a lot about Jesus, but I didn’t know Jesus. I spent most of my high school years being very involved in ministries and making that my identity. I put so much of my worth into what I was doing, and helping others know Jesus, but lacked the relationship with Him. During my freshman year of college at the University of Illinois, I found myself completely stripped of what I had and who I was. It was at the Newman Center that I found incredible friends, and by the grace of God I started to pray regularly and to attend daily mass. It was through this that I slowly started to have a relationship with Jesus – and found my identity in Him, as his beloved daughter. I never knew how much He was waiting for me to come to Him, and let myself be loved by Him.

I was especially drawn to the FOCUS missionaries on our campus – the way they radically live their lives for Jesus and devote themselves to encountering students like myself. I never knew a relationship with Jesus was possible, and now, it has transformed my life. My desire in becoming a missionary is to encounter women who are also seeking the one whom their souls love and to walk with them as beloved daughters of the King.

Crecí entre una familia muy católica, sabia mucho sobre Jesús, pero realmente no lo conocía. Durante la preparatoria, estuve muy involucrada en distintos ministerios, hasta el punto de hacer de ellos me identidad. Ponía mi valor en todo lo que hacía y en ayudar a otros a conocer a Jesús, mientras yo misma aun no tenía una relación personal con Él. Todo cambió  durante mi primer año en la Universidad de Illinois. De un momento a otro me encontré despojada de todo aquello en lo que había puesto mi identidad y sin saber realmente quién era. Fue en el Newman Center donde Dios me regaló una comunidad de amigo extraordinaria y, por su gracia, comencé a tener una vida de oración constante y a participar en la Santa Misa todos los días. Poco a poco, a través de esos encuentros cotidianos con Él, empece a construir una relación verdadera con Jesús. Fue entonces cuando descubrí que mi identidad no estaba en lo que hacía para Dios, sino en quién era para Él: su hija amada. Nunca imaginé cuánto tiempo Él había estado esperándome, deseando simplemente que me acercara a Él y me dejara amar por su amor.

De manera especial, me sentí profundamente inspirada por los misioneros de FOCUS en nuestro campus. Su forma tan radical de vivir para Cristo y su entrega generosa para salir al encuentro de los estudiantes me mostraron que una relación íntima con Jesús no solo era posible, sino que estaba al alcance de todos. Yo no sabía que una relación así podia existir, y hoy puedo decir que ha transformado por completo mi vida.

Ahora, como misionera de FOCUS, deseo hacer por otras mujeres lo que alguien hizo por mi. Anhelo salir el encuentro de aquellas que también buscan ser amadas por el Creador, caminar a su lado mientras descubren su identidad com hijas de Dios y el amor que cambió mi vida para siempre.

When I answered the call to join FOCUS, I made the decision to rely on the spiritual and financial support of mission partners to help me through this mission.
