Hello! I’m Julio Yahir Hernandez and I’ll be a FOCUS Missionary at the UMass Amherst!
“The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness!” – Pope Benedict XVI
I am so excited to be a first year missionary serving the students at University of Massachusetts Amherst! I’m excited to explore the state of Massachusetts and growing in faith and friendships at UMass Amherst!
Although I grew up Catholic, I didn’t personally encounter Jesus until my first year at George Mason University. I went into college wanting the secular experience but felt like there was still something missing. I then accepted an invitation to an annual retreat hosted by George Mason’s Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM). That’s where I first met Jesus. After that, He slowly started revealing Himself to me. I got involved in a FOCUS Bible study and discipleship. Slowly but surely I started to fall in love with Jesus and learned what it meant to live a truly Christian life. I eventually took on various leadership roles at Mason’s CCM and got to lead my own guys in Bible study and discipleship.
My life changed during my time in college and not in the way I expected when I first started. College is a time where many students fall away from their faith. I am blessed to be able to serve at another college campus and help bring students closer to their faith and teach them what it really means to be Catholic.

We encounter God in an intimate relationship through daily prayer, the sacraments and the Scriptures.
By building genuine friendships, we meet students on a deeper level.
We teach students how to share the gospel, who in turn teach other students how to pass it on.
