If you’ve ever seen a statue of Mary wearing a flowing white robe with a golden crown, hands folded in prayer, chances are you’ve encountered Our Lady of Fatima. But what exactly happened at Fatima? And why does this Marian apparition still matter over 100 years later?
The Story: What Happened in Fatima?
It all started in 1917 in a small village in Fatima, Portugal, during a time of global turmoil. World War I was raging, and political upheaval was shaking many nations, including Portugal. In the midst of this, three young shepherd children—Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto—were tending their sheep when something extraordinary happened.
On May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to them for the first time. Over the next six months, she appeared to them six times, always on the 13th of the month, delivering messages that would change the world.

The Message of Fatima
Mary’s message to the children wasn’t just a nice conversation—it was a call to action. She spoke about prayer, repentance, and peace, urging them (and all of us) to turn back to God.
1. Pray the Rosary Daily
Mary asked the children to pray the Rosaryevery day for peace in the world and the conversion of sinners. This is why the Rosary is often associated with Fatima.
2. Offer Sacrifices for Sinners
She encouraged the children to offer small sacrifices for the conversion of souls, uniting their suffering with Christ’s.
3. The Vision of Hell
In July, Mary showed them a terrifying vision of hell, reminding them of the urgency of repentance and the need to pray for those far from God.
4. Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Mary revealed that Russia would spread great evils unless it was consecrated to her Immaculate Heart—a request that later played a major role in Church history.
5. A Great Miracle Would Happen

The Miracle of the Sun
On October 13, 1917, 70,000 people gathered in Fatima despite heavy rain, waiting to see if Mary’s promise would come true. Suddenly, the clouds broke, and the sun began to spin, change colors, and zigzag across the sky—something that defied all natural laws. Many thought it was the end of the world, while others fell to their knees in awe. Even secular newspapers documented the event, making it one of the most well-recorded miracles in history.
The Three Secrets of Fatima
During the July apparition, Mary entrusted the children with three secrets — and for years, they kept them.
The first secret was the terrifying vision of hell you read about above — souls lost to sin, shown to the children not to frighten them, but to fuel their mission to pray and sacrifice for sinners.
The second secret was a prophecy: a warning that if Russia was not consecrated to Mary’s Immaculate Heart, it would spread its errors throughout the world — a message that felt shockingly relevant as the 20th century unfolded.
The third secret was the most mysterious of all, kept under lock and key by the Vatican until the year 2000, when Pope John Paul II finally revealed it. It described a vision of violence and persecution against the Church — and John Paul II himself believed it pointed to the 1981 assassination attempt on his life, which happened, of all days, on May 13th — the anniversary of the very first apparition. Coincidence? He didn’t think so.
Why Does Fatima Still Matter Today?
You might be thinking, Okay, but that was over 100 years ago. Why should I care today?
Fatima isn’t just a historical event—it’s a message for our time. Mary’s words are just as relevant now as they were in 1917.
- The world still needs peace. We might not be in World War I, but wars, violence, and division still plague our world.
- People still need conversion. Fatima reminds us that sin is real, but so is God’s mercy.
- Prayer—especially the Rosary—changes lives. If Mary asked us to pray the Rosary daily, maybe we should take that seriously.
